Treatment of Yeast Infection

The doctor does a physical examination and takes a sample of the white thick discharge. The sample is then examined under the microscope to confirm the growth of the fungus.

Yeast infection can be treated by using over the counter medication or the doctor may prescribe suppositories or creams.

The aim of the treatment is to kill the fungus and allow the growth of the friendly bacteria. Medication can be applied directly on the infected areas or the doctor may prescribe oral medicines. However, the medication applied directly in the vagina is more preferred since it has lesser side effects and is safe even for pregnant women.
The friendly bacteria can be introduced in the body by eating yogurt with active cultures daily. Many women find relief with this home remedy. Craneberry juice with it anti-inflammatory properties is also known to help yeast infection. Doctors also recommend cutting down on sugar and food rich in carbohydrates as these are conducive to the growth of yeast.
Women who have not experienced yeast infection may not be aware of the exact symptoms of yeast infection and therefore should not start the treatment on their own by using the over the counter medication.
